Ioan James: Asperger's Syndrome and High Achievement : Some Very Remarkable People

Asperger's Syndrome and High Achievement : Some Very Remarkable People

Description

'This book describes the lives and personalities of 20 remarkable people from the past, who may well have had Asperger's syndrome (AS). Famous in the fields of art, literature and science, among others, they illustrate vividly how highly intelligent people are able to surmount some of the problems that AS causes and achieve so much - more than might have been possible without it.' - Human Givens 'The aim of this book is to raise the self-esteem of individuals with AS. It certainly illustrates how much the world owes to people with AS. It would be relevant to anyone with an interest in AS.' - Good Autism Practice 'A highly readable text.' - Advances in Clinical Neuroscience and Rehabilitation 'Definitely worth a read.' - The National Association for Gifted Children 'James makes a convincing case for including each on the list. He also helps to explain what some dismiss as "artistic creativity" as actually a logical aspect of AS.' - Book News This fascinating collection identifies famous figures from the past whose behaviour suggests they may have had autism, a disorder that was not defined until the mid-20th century. James looks at the lives of 20 individuals - scientists, artists, politicians and philosophers - examining in detail their interests, successes, indifferences and shortcomings. Among the profiles are those of mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russell, who wondered in his autobiography how he managed to hurt the people around him quite without meaning to; biologist Alfred Kinsey, who excelled in academia but was ill at ease in social situations; and the writer Patricia Highsmith, who had very definite likes (fountain pens and absence of noise) and dislikes (television and four-course meals). From Albert Einstein to Philip of Spain, these intriguing individuals all showed clear evidence of autistic traits. This book will be of interest to general readers and anyone with a personal or professional interest in autism.

You long to serve God with grace and strength, to reflect Christ in every word and action. Yet you find yourself continually struggling to bring that vision to life in your daily walk. He would rewrite the past to save the woman he loves. Turning water into wine took Jesus a few minutes. Changing a reed (which 'Simon' means) into a rock ('Peter') took quite a few years. Which is the greater miracle, transmuting nature or Leading in a Culture of Change pdf transforming human nature? Many identify with Simon Peter's weaknesses, not least his knack of opening his mouth and putting his foot in it! On one occasion he even swore that he didn't know his best friend, just to save his own skin. Jesus taught this fisherman how to catch more fish, then how to catch people. He used that unruly tongue to preach the good news of his death and resurrection for the very first time, netting thousands for the kingdom of God. In this book David Pawson draws some unexpected lessons from Peter's failures and successes for both our individual and corporate lives as part of the Church of which Peter was the original pastor.

Michael Fullan: Leading in a Culture of Change

Leading in a Culture of Change

Description

"At the very time the need for effective leadership is reaching critical proportions, Michael Fullan's Leading in a Culture of Change provides powerful insights for moving forward. We look forward to sharing it with our grantees." --Tom Vander Ark, executive director, Education, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation "Fullan articulates clearly the core values and practices of leadership required at all levels of the organization. Using specific examples, he convinces us that the key change principles are equally critical for leadership in business and education organizations." --John Evans, chairman, Torstar Corporation "In Leading in a Culture of Change, Michael Fullan deftly combines his expertise in school reform with the latest insights in organizational change and leadership. The result is a compelling and insightful exposition on how leaders in any setting can bring about lasting, positive, systemic change in their organizations." --John Alexander, president, Center for Creative Leadership "Michael Fullan's work is remarkable. He masterfully captures how leaders can significantly improve their learning and performance, even in the uncontrollable, chaotic circumstances in which they practice. A tour de force." --Anthony Alvarado, chancellor of instruction, San Diego City Schools "Too often schools and businesses are seen as separate and foreign places. Michael Fullan blends the best of knowledge from each into an exemplary template for improving leadership in both." --Terrence E. Deal, coauthor of Leading with Soul Business, nonprofit, and public sector leaders are facing new and daunting challenges--rapid-paced developments in technology, sudden shifts in the marketplace, and crisis and contention in the public arena. If they are to survive in this chaotic environment, leaders must develop the skills they need to lead effectively no matter how fast the world around them is changing. Leading in a Culture of Change offers new and seasoned leaders' insights into the dynamics of change and presents a unique and imaginative approach for navigating the intricacies of the change process. Michael Fullan--an internationally acclaimed expert in organizational change--shows how leaders in all types of organizations can accomplish their goals and become exceptional leaders. He draws on the most current ideas and theories on the topic of effective leadership, incorporates case examples of large scale transformation, and reveals a remarkable convergence of powerful themes or, as he calls them, the five core competencies. By integrating the five core competencies--attending to a broader moral purpose, keeping on top of the change process, cultivating relationships, sharing knowledge, and setting a vision and context for creating coherence in organizations--leaders will be empowered to deal with complex change. They will be transformed into exceptional leaders who consistently mobilize their compatriots to do important and difficult work under conditions of constant change.

Message

Description

Eugene H. Peterson wrote "The Message" in contemporary language that uses the words and phrases you might say when talking with a good friend. When paired with your favorite Bible study, "The Message" will deliver a reading experience that is reliable, energetic, and amazingly fresh. This top-selling, padded blue hardback is popular to give as a gift. Trim size: 6 x 9 3/16.

From acclaimed biographer A. N. Wilson, Hitler is a short, sharp, gripping account of one of the twentieth century's most notorious figures In this brilliant short biography of Adolf Hitler, acclaimed historian A N Wilson offers a fresh interpretation of the life of the 'ultimate demon-tyrant of history'. In 1923, aged thirty -four, Hitler was languishing in prison after leading an unsuccessful putsch to overthrow the German Government. Within a decade he was German Chancellor, one of the most powerful men in Europe. How did he do it? Had Hitler been a regular politician, Wilson argues, he would have vanished without trace after his prison experience. But he was not a regular politician, but rather a conjurer, seeing politics not as the Art of the Possible but as the Art of the Impossible: 'Whereas politicians watched the weather and waited for calm, Hitler wanted to ride storms.' Among the book's many insights, Wilson shows how Hitler had an intuitive sense which amounted to genius that the spoken word was Message download PDF going to be of more significance than the written word during the twentieth century.

The Truth: An Uncomfortable Book About Relationships

Description

NO MORE GAMES. IT'S TIME FOR THE TRUTH. Neil Strauss made a name for himself advocating freedom, sex and opportunity as the author of The Game. Then he met the woman who forced him to question everything. Neil's search for answers took him from Viagra-laden free-love orgies to sex addiction clinics, from cutting-edge science labs to modern-day harems, and, most terrifying of all, to his own mother. What he discovered changed everything he knew about love, sex, relationships and, ultimately, himself. The Truth may have the same effect on you.

Laced with startling revelations - about fail-safe top-secret back channels between the CIA and KGB, double and triple agents, covert operations in Berlin and Prague, and the fateful autumn of 1989 - The Main Enemy is history at its action-packed best. He saw the universal granting of independence to the colonies as a sign that the West was abdicating its civilising mission. This is the first full-length English-language scholarly biography of a key Portuguese political leader and an icon of twentieth-century politics. She develops this idea by clarifying the nature of structural injustice; developing the notion of political responsibility for injustice and how it differs from older ideas of blame and guilt; and finally how we can then use this model to describe our responsibilities to others no matter who we are and where we live. With a foreword by Martha C. Nussbaum, this last statement by a revered and highly influential thinker will be of great interest to political theorists and philosophers, ethicists, and feminist and political philosophers. 'Iris Marion Young's death in 2006 was a tragic loss for the field of political theory, and this manuscript is evidence of how much she had yet to contribute. Like all her work, it addresses issues of enormous philosophical and political importance, and does so in a way that is original and insightful. It integrates a rich array of examples, concepts, theories and resources, from empirical social science The Truth: An Uncomfortable Book About Relationships free ebook to continental philosophy, and does so in a way that is seamless and effortless...it's an important manuscript and a fitting testament to Young's career."

The Whispers of Nemesis

Description

From the real life Shirley Valentine, Anne Zouroudi's fifth Greek mystery with the popular detective, Hermes Diaktoros. Nine Lives to Die

Description

NATIONAL BESTSELLER NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY "SUSPENSE MAGAZINE" Rita Mae Brown and her feline co-author Sneaky Pie Brown return with an all-new mystery starring Mary Minor Harry Haristeen, intrepid kitty sleuths Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, and Tee Tucker, the ever-faithful crime-solving corgi. This time around, Harry and her animal friends track a killer whose trail has gone as cold as the weather in December. NINE LIVES TO DIE Winter has come to Crozet, Virginia, bringing with it a fresh blanket of snow. Harry and her husband, Fair, are hip deep in their usual end-of-the-year activities: distributing food to needy residents, and shopping for outfits for the Silver Linings youth organization s annual fundraising gala. But buried beneath the white stuff are dark secrets from Crozet s past and Harry and her posse of pet detectives are determined to sniff them out. Two Silver Linings mentors have been found dead in suspicious circumstances. If that weren t enough to chill the bones of the locals, a pair of severed human fingers has turned up in a pencil jar in the bookkeeper s office at St. Cyril s church. What does this grisly display have to do with the mysterious disappearance of Harry s voluptuous high school Latin teacher, a quarter of a century ago? Maybe nothing. But when the animals make another gruesome discovery in the woods behind Harry s farm, it becomes clear that terrible crimes have been committed in Crozet and somebody s gone to great lengths to cover them up. It s time to stop shoveling snow and start digging for clues. The truth will be revealed. A cold case will be solved. And a twenty-five-year-old love triangle is about to get untangled. The weather outside may be frightful, but Harry and her four-legged friends refuse to be spooked off the case. IV Dr. Chauncey Crandall: Raising the Dead: A Doctor Encounters the Miraculous

Raising the Dead: A Doctor Encounters the Miraculous

Description

On October 20, 2006, a middle-aged auto mechanic, Jeff Markin, walked into the emergency room at the Palm Beach Gardens Hospital and collapsed from a massive heart attack. Forty minutes later he was declared dead. After filling out his final report, the supervising cardiologist, Dr. Chauncey Crandall, started out of the room. "Before I crossed its threshold, however, I sensed God was telling me to turn around and pray for the patient," Crandall says. With that prayer and Dr. Crandall's instruction to give the man what seemed one more useless shock from the defibrillator, Jeff Markin came back to life - and remains alive and well today. But how did a Yale-educated cardiologist whose Palm Beach practice includes some of the most powerful people in American society, including several billionaires, come to believe in supernatural healing? The answers to these questions compose a story and a spiritual journey that transformed Chauncey Crandall.

Description

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka is often cited as one of the seminal works of short fiction of the 20th century and is widely studied in colleges and universities across the western world; Elias Canetti described it as "one of the few great and perfect works of the poetic imagination written during this century." Rather than lament his transformation, Gregor worries about how he will get to his job as a traveling salesman; Gregor is the sole financial provider for his parents and sister, Greta, and their comfort is dependent on his ability to work. Anna Katharine Green,John Curran: The Detective Club: The Leavenworth Case

The Detective Club: The Leavenworth Case

Description

THIS DETECTIVE STORY CLUB CLASSIC is introduced by Dr John Curran, who looks at how Anna Katherine Green was a pioneer who inspired a new generation of crime writers, in particular a young woman named Agatha Christie. When the retired merchant Horatio Leavenworth is found shot dead in his mansion library, suspicion falls on his nieces, Mary and Eleanore, who stand to inherit his vast fortune. Their lawyer, Everett Raymond, infatuated with one of the sisters, is determined that the official investigator, detective Ebenezer Gryce, widens the inquiry to less obvious suspects. The Leavenworth Case, the first detective novel written by a woman, immortalised its author Anna Katharine Green as 'The Mother of Detective Fiction'. Admired for her careful plotting and legal accuracy, the book enjoyed enormous success both in England and America, and was widely translated. It was republished by The Detective Story Club after Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, speaking at the 1928 Thanksgiving Day dinner of the American Society in London, remarked: 'An American woman, a successor of Poe, Anna K. Green, gave us The Leavenworth Case, which I still think one of the best detective stories ever written.'

Paul K. Feyerabend: Against Method

Against Method

Description

Contemporary philosophy of science has paid close attention to the understanding of scientific practice, in contrast to the previous focus on scientific method. Paul Feyerabend's acclaimed work, which sparked controversy and continues to fuel fierce debate, shows the deficiencies of many widespread ideas about the nature of knowledge. He argues that the only feasible explanation of any scientific success is a historical account, and that anarchism must now replace rationalism in the theory of knowledge. This updated edition of this classic text contains a new foreword by Ian Hacking, a leading contemporary philosopher of science, who reflects on Feyerabend's life and personality as well as the continuing relevance of his work.

Offering a glimpse into what lies ahead, specifically the years 2017-2026, he explains Donald Miller's dad left when he was very young. From that point onwards, Donald felt different. Different from the other boys in his class; different from the other boys at camp. He discovered that growing up without a father to show him the ropes is hard work. Dads have crucial wisdom to impart to their sons, but without one, life seems a whole lot harder. With honest humour and raw self-revelation, bestselling author Donald Miller talks about growing up without a father and discusses the issues that befall the 'fatherless generation'. Miller shares his journey from self-pity and brokenness to hope and strength, providing guidance for the growing numbers of young adults floundering in an age with fewer and fewer positive domestic male role models. This amusing, but ultimately inspiring memoir provides encouragement for both men and women who've grown up with absent fathers, as well as the wives, girlfriends and friends of those with a similar story.

George W Carey: The Zodiac and the Salts of Salvation

The Zodiac and the Salts of Salvation

Description

2013 Reprint of 1932 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Color reproduction of Frontispiece. George Washington Carey (1845-1924) was an American physician known for a number of 1910s 'Chemistry of Life' publications, a subject which he referred to as biochemistry, particularly his 1919 "The Chemistry of Human Life." Carey combined a mixture of religion, astrology, physiology, anatomy, and chemistry, themed particularly with a mineral-based theory of human disease, to develop his theories. Carey is popular among the new-age and homeopathic circles. In the context of a person viewed as a "human molecule," Carey was the first to state that a person's body is a "chemical formula in operation." This title is divided into two parts. Part 1 is entitled the "Relation of the Mineral Salts of the Body to the Signs of the Zodiac," while Part 2 is an "Esoteric Analysis and Synthesis of the Zodiacal Signs and their Physiochemical Allocations." With the renewed interest in homeopathy, increased study of astrology and the entrance of the Aquarian Age, this book has gained more importance. It is an attempt to answer all the questions regarding the cell salts. Part 1 is a brief and concise outline of the 12 signs of the zodiac, their symbolism and the salts to be used to overcome any disease. Part 2 enlarges on Part 1 by discussing the physiochemical analysis, symbolism and actual use of each mineral salt.
